AI assistants for elderly parents: no app, just text or WhatsApp

Which AI assistants can an older parent use from SMS or WhatsApp, without installing an app?

Updated · 6 assistants ranked

Six assistants are reached by SMS or WhatsApp with no app channel listed and took at least two of our Routines, Proactive Help, Permissions and Phone calls tests. We test features, not how easy any of them is for an older person; trying one yourself with the person who will use it is the real check.

How this report works

Included are assistants whose listed channels include SMS or WhatsApp and no app (checked 2026-10-26), ranked by the average of Routines, Proactive Help, Permissions and Phone calls, with at least two taken. Some may still ask for a web sign-in to connect accounts; the catalog does not record that. Scores come from the published score sheet and are dated 2026-10-27. 3 of the 6 ranked assistants (Ask Ranger, Bantr and Ka) carry pre-filled scores, which are placeholder estimates the site has not yet replaced with its own test runs, so treat their places as provisional. Tinynature and Ka have two tests each, so their averages are thin.

How to choose

  • Pick the channel they already use. SMS works on any phone; WhatsApp needs the WhatsApp app on their phone; iMessage only works on iPhones.
  • Look at Routines for medication or appointment reminders, but remember the test checks a weekday briefing arrives on time, not medical use.
  • Check Permissions before sharing accounts. The test scores whether the assistant is clear about what it can see, follows the rules you set and lets go when you disconnect it.
  • Mind the cost. Pally is free; Ask Ranger is free during private beta and lists $5 a month; Ollie lists $25 and Ka $14.99. Bantr and Tinynature list no price.

Is there an AI assistant for elderly parents that needs no app?

Six ranked assistants are reached by SMS or WhatsApp with no app channel listed: Pally, Ollie, Ask Ranger, Tinynature, Bantr and Ka. Pally averages 9.3 across three tests and Ka 5.5 across two. None is tested for ease of use by older people.

Can it remind them to take medication or go to appointments?

Routines tests a scheduled morning briefing for a week, including a change on day 4. That shows reminders can arrive on time, but the tests are not medical and we do not recommend relying on an assistant for medication.

What should I check before setting one up for a parent?

Which accounts it will connect to, what it can send on its own, and how to disconnect it. The Permissions test scores those three things; the result is on each assistant's page.
